# Recycle Bin

Find out what happens when you delete a form or a folder, and how to restore it or remove it for good.

Deleting a form or a folder moves it to the recycle bin. Nothing is removed from the database until you delete it from the bin.

The **Recycle Bin** sits below the form tree in the **Forms** section.

## Move a form or folder to the recycle bin

1. Go to the **Forms** section.
2. Select the form or folder you want to delete.
3. Open the **Actions** menu and select **Trash**.
4. Confirm the move.

Deleting a folder moves the folder and everything inside it to the recycle bin.

{% hint style="warning" %}
A form in the recycle bin no longer renders on your website. A page that uses the form renders nothing in its place, and the Forms API returns a "not found" response for it.

Restore the form, or point the page at another form, to show a form again.
{% endhint %}

The entries submitted to a form are kept while the form is in the recycle bin.

## Restore a form or folder

1. Go to the **Forms** section.
2. Open the **Recycle Bin**.
3. Select the form or folder you want to restore.
4. Open the **Actions** menu and select **Restore**.
5. A panel opens, naming the item and the folder it returns to. Select **Restore**.

   ![The Restore panel, showing which folder the form returns to.](https://3134593492-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F8xCfyNy4WLrfX8D6oTtt%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-30ec4df8802d37d2fc36688c35830c6f8e92f6fd%2Frecycle-bin-restore.png?alt=media)

The item returns to the folder it was deleted from. If that folder is itself still in the recycle bin, the item returns to the root of the **Forms** tree instead.

If another form or folder in the destination already uses the same name, Umbraco Forms adds a suffix to keep the names unique.

## Delete a form or folder for good

1. Go to the **Forms** section.
2. Open the **Recycle Bin**.
3. Select the form or folder you want to remove.
4. Open the **Actions** menu and select **Delete**.
5. Confirm the deletion.

To remove everything in the bin at once, open the **Recycle Bin** and select **Empty recycle bin**.

{% hint style="danger" %}
Deleting a form from the recycle bin cannot be undone. The form is removed along with its entries, its workflows, its stored versions, and its user permissions.

Export the entries you need before you delete a form. For details, see the [Viewing and Exporting Entries](/umbraco-forms/editor/viewing-and-exporting-entries.md) article.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.umbraco.com/umbraco-forms/editor/managing-forms/recycle-bin.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
